But several scenes from 'Manhunter' are burned irremovabley into my memory. You bought it every second Petersen's mind was going over the edge, imagining and fetischising the things Dollarhyde would. His crimes were obliquely referenced and it's not entirely clear why visiting him is either going to be useful in an investigation or why Graham is so troubled by the experience. Sorry dude, but his presence is unden....wait, it's cancelled? Cast: William L. Petersen, Kim Greist, Joan Allen, Brian Cox, Dennis … Red Dragon the movie is literally an interpretation of the book. Watch Red Dragon now and then later go back and watch Manhunter when you have more time. Petersen effectively became both the hero and the villain of the story that way, articulating exactly the perverted impulses that would lead someone to butcher a whole family with such conviction he was the scariest part about the movie. I'm not saying that to be edgy or contrarian or anything; I realize Hopkins performance in SotL defined the character. The performances are better in Red Dragon, with two notable exceptions. The entire movie reeks of a serious lack of balls. Red Dragon is by far better. Manhunter – 2 Red Dragon – 3 Red Dragon wins Try human meat its tasty. NC (voiceover): In the role of Will Graham, we got William Petersen in "Manhunter" and Edward Norton in "Red Dragon." Though not as well-known as THE SILENCE OF THE LAMBS, MANHUNTER is a must-see for Lecter lovers everywhere. Red Dragon has the best cast of any of the Hannibal films. What made Manhunter for me is William Peterson's portrayal of Will Graham. When most people hear the name 'Hannibal Lecter,' they immediately think of Anthony Hopkins in Silence of the Lambs, a performance which earned him an … You would be hard-pressed to look at Red Dragon and recognize the director from the work, but (for people who know) Manhunter is a Michael Mann film through-and-through. Manhunter because I love Michael Mann's '80s style. /u/uzicopter made the good point it really depends on your sensibilities and what you are into. I still think Brian Cox made a better Lecter. With William Petersen, Kim Greist, Joan Allen, Brian Cox. Now if I was going to do this alone I would see both back to back to see the differences but I am not and so I need to pick and choose one of the two. Thomas Harris first introduced us to the now iconic character Dr. Hannibal Lecter back in 1981 with Red Dragon, though his role in this narrative is decidedly small, but no less impactful to Will Graham, a special investigator for the FBI. His Hannibal is angry, creepy, disturbed, malevolent and above all arrogant in a way that Hopkins is not. Red Dragon is a much more polished film in almost every way, but Manhunter has that Michael Mann-80's style that is completely his own. And the music is cool. The complex leading man of Mindhunter, played perfectly by Jonathan Groff, is based on John E. Douglas, the author of the book Mindhunter: Inside the FBI’s Elite Serial Crime Unit.Douglas is … For me, there is no comparison between the Lecter/Lektor performances: Brian Cox delivers the better performance, by far. Also if you haven't yet read the Hannibal books then you're missing out. Red Dragon was just aping the Silence aesthetic wholesale, whereas Manhunter had a distinct look and feel. You felt every inch of his anguish and intensity, even if it smacked of 80s thriller tropes and even Mann's own cliche stock cop characteristics. In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida climax is fantastic. Fiennes tries so hard to breathe some sympathetic life into a character, Ratner clearly seeing Dollarhyde as so much of a tragic hero that it becomes cliche. William Petersen is fantastic in it. Then again, young William Petersen, kinda nostalgic. Streaming Manhunt (2016) Online : Watch Now!.Watch Manhunt (2016) Movie Streaming Online on your Iphone. They both do great work. I really dig Ed Norton, Harvey Keitel and PSH so there is that. "He's not so bad, he's just tormented, his grandmother was a bitch and he hears voices". Manhunter is a 1986 film based on the book Red Dragon by Thomas Harris. Moreover, for me there was a real disconnect between the person Hopkins was playing when he and Norton are simply chatting at the beginning of Red Dragon and the person who attacks Norton. Manhunter is horribly dated, not a single note of that soundtrack stands up as anything but old, it has all the hallmarks of 80s thriller cliches with the quietly anguished hero going rogue, sacrificing himself for the greater good, his wife standing obediently by as he goes about his man-business type of shit. Norton's performance is perfectly capable and he is inherently a sympathetic actor, so he wins, even if it is just by default. I've never seen Manhunter, but I can't imagine a scarier character than Hopkins's Lecter. In 1981 Thomas Harris published Red Dragon, his first serial killer thriller. I just finished the Hannibal series and it leads up perfectly to them movies. That said, Noonan by far had the finer portrayal of Dollarhyde of anyone. Personally, I don't think you can even compare Cox and Hopkins. Despite some good performances in Red Dragon (other than Norton’s), Manhunter is the more rewatchable of the two films. A side-by-side, shot-for-shot comparison between Manhunter (1986), Red Dragon (2002), and Hannibal (2013-15). BTW, so in this battle of Manhunter vs Red Dragon it sounds like you're casting your vote for Red Dragon? Anthony Hopkins IS that character now and forever. I guess if I had to say which was the better film, I'd barely give the edge to Red Dragon, but I actually prefer Manhunter, personally. With Manhunter currently available on youtube, I started thinking about this myself. Manhunter is an underrated gem that was ahead of its time. He is efficient and does the job but never excels in any way, the whole movie feels like it was drawn by the numbers, hobbled together as pieces from dozens of other movies. I'm old enough to have seen Manhunter when it cae out, but I still felt that Red Dragon was slightly better. Manhunter is ok, but it's got a kinda cheesy '80s/early 90's vibe to it that makes it kinda bleh to me. Captures 80s noir without going full Miami Vice. All of the actors in Manhunter are incredibly talented and more than a bit underserved by the direction they were given. Red Dragon is the X-Men 3 of the Hannibal franchise. In terms of books, Red Dragon came first then the sequel Silence of the Lamb. The characterizations in Manhunter were much more true to the book. The Red Dragon aesthetic has to rely on the Silence derived American Gothic which has been seen a lot relying on a more historical based Psycho aping almost sympathetically shown killer next to Noonans out and out psychopath not created, simply a force of nature and vengeful retribution. Edited by Matt Skuta I agree completely. New comments cannot be posted and votes cannot be cast, News & Discussion about Major Motion Pictures, Press J to jump to the feed. Ha! For comparison, check out what he did with his role in Avatar and you will see that this actor has an incredible range that was almost totally unexplored in Manhunter. Watch them both but Mam Hunter is fat more superior. Hopkins for me teetered on the edge of unintentional humor throughout Red Dragon, but when he was on the right side of the fence, he was magnetic. Red Dragon was pretty awesome. Manhunter is a favorite; it completely ruined Red Dragon for me. So I am going to watch the movies as is the nature of these things. Press question mark to learn the rest of the keyboard shortcuts. Defo. You would be hard-pressed to look at Red Dragon and recognize the director from the work, but (for people who know) Manhunter is … Overrated vs. Underrated. For me, it felt like a twist-for-the-sake-of-a-twist that you might find in a bad movie (like the complete reversal of the Hans character in "Frozen"), instead of a nuanced performance. Maybe I'll check it out. profiler Will Graham (William Petersen) returns to service to pursue a deranged serial killer named "the Tooth Fairy" (Tom Noonan) by the media.
